Are you a secret blogger?

I have a confession to make. Only a few people in my ‘real life’ know I blog, when I say a few I mean my mum and two friends. All of whom don’t really know anything about blogging so aren’t interested and don’t bat an eye lid. The more I think about it, the odder I find it. I feel like I spend a large part of my spare time blogging or thinking about it. I have lots of amazing, supportive friends and family, so why haven’t I shared my hobby with them?
I’m not sure I actually have a definitive answer to that question. Am I embarrassed of my little space on the blogosphere? Well no, I’m actually really proud – not in a big headed way, promise! I have just put a lot of time into it and achieved things I would have never guessed possible or that I would have had the skills to do. I think it’s the ‘my little space’ that may be a preventative to sharing. I originally started blogging as a personal project to improve my writing skills and as an outlet to vent what’s on my mind. I never expected anyone to read it. I didn’t even realise that there was a concept of ‘followers’ or that there was even such an amazing and supportive blogging community out there. It’s something that still amazes me!
Blogging has been such a positive experience for me and I guess maybe sharing what I do opens it up for criticism, which I’m not sure I’m ready for. I’m also not sure my friends would understand it, none of them do anything like this (that I know of!). What if they don’t get it? What if they make fun of it? Urgh, I HATE ‘what ifs…..’! but it then leads to the questions, do and should I care what people think? Do their opinions matter and why?
I guess the purpose of this post was to get my thoughts out there in black and white. It’s been playing on my mind since a #bbloggers chat before Christmas, where a few lovely bloggers mentioned no one close to them knows they blog. I can hear you thinking – am I going to out myself as a blogger? The answer is probably not just yet! Maybe someday but right now I quite like having a naughty little secret!
Are you a secret blogger? Do your friends know about your blog? How do they react to it?

  1. I'm a secret blogger too! I told my boyfriend and parents recently, but I haven't told them the name or anything! It is so weird to spend so much time thinking about blogging and people have no idea! I think I would be more self-conscious if I knew my friends and family were reading what I write x

  2. I am! My parents know about it but don't know the web address, but my boyfriend really wanted to see it so I finally gave in and showed him it the other day, and he couldn't have been more supportive - he even wants to help me come up with posts/take photos etc. For now though, I'm happy with just my parents and boyfriend knowing - I wouldn't really want to tell friends and other family members until I've got used to it myself and have more posts up. Although a few posts do feature pictures of people I haven't told, so that's when I always question whether I should tell them.....such a tricky one!

    Great post!

  3. I am. One of my friends found out but I was gone with that as she also has a blog and she's a close friend so she wouldn't make any rude comments. I do wonder if she saved the address though and visits it...
Nobody else knows. I think when I'm done with Uni I'll be more open.
I just feel people wouldn't get why I would have a blog. Probably because to them I may not seem that big on beauty etc.
They haven't seen my bank account lol

  4. I kind of am. I say "kind of" because some people know. I am doing a fashion degree and we MUST have a blog as it has been asked by the teachers however I did not share my link with other girls in my class or in general.
My boyfriend knows about it and is curious but I never shared it with him. Maybe I will soon. I am not ashamed or anything I am just scared people will look at me as if I'm a weirdo. Same goes for my YouTube channel.

  5. Only one of my friends knows about my blog and that's it. In some ways I like it that way as im very open and honest on my blog. But at same time its something to be proud of. :)

  6. I used to keep it pretty quiet, only my boyfriend and parents knew but then I thought 'WHY?' what was so bad about everybody else knowing about my blog? So I started linking my blog posts through my Facebook and Twitter, then casually brining it up in conversation with people, especially if we where out for a meal and I was taking pictures of my food etc. You know what? EVERYONE has been really supportive and so many of them now read my blog too! I've had colleagues come up to me and start talking to me about things they've seen on my blog - and I didn't even know they read it! I'm really open about my blogging-ventures now and it's great! I've even talked about blogging on job applications!

  7. All of my friends and family know that I blog and they're all super supportive and lovely about it. My boyfriend takes my OOTD photo's so he definitely knows! I'm always sharing bits and bobs over twitter and facebook too, so I'm assuming quite a few people know that I do it. I sometimes get a little sheepish when I talk about my blog with new people, or if I'm taking photo's and other people see me doing it, but actually I'm super proud so I don't want to hide it form anyone. Share it with the people you love, they'll love it! xxx

  9. Gemma, I'm amazed at so many bloggers hiding what they are doing. At first I was a secret blogger too. I thought that it could be considered frivolous. But now I'm quite proud of myself. Every post takes me hours and I hope this is noticeable. Writing quality content is my main concern :))

  11. I'm a secret blogger of sorts, my mum knows and like you only 2 of my friends but they don't have a clue what it's all about! I think it's one of those things that you don't just say to people, they naturally find out! Xx

  12. I'm a bit of a secret blogger. My mum and sister know, as well as my boyfriend and a handful of friends. I don't exactly keep it secret, but I don't shout it from the rooftops either if that makes sense?

  13. I recently "came clean" and it's been amazing how much support I've received! I have random friends messaging me through Facebook commenting to me about my blog, I've had someone else ask how to start one... I was so nervous to put it out there but am glad I did!

  14. My family are all largely useless at technology, so I've not really bothered telling them for the sheer fact I doubt they'd know how to get onto my blog to read it bless them! My boyfriend knows but doesn't read it, however quite a few of my friends know and read it, as a lot of them have blogs of their own :) Love this post, so nice to know other people find it a weird thing to bring up in conversation!

  15. I've been a secret blogger for the last four years with no intentions to change it - my husband knows and that's the important thing. It's actually his home page. I find often on blog chats being a secret blogger gets shouted down a lot, that there's something wrong with us for not sharing our work. But I won't be shouting my blog from the hills to the people back home any time soon - not that i'm not proud of my blog or what I write, but basically because I just don't want them to be involved in that part of my life.

  17. No-one really knows about my blog. My best friend was round the other day and she saw it on my laptop so she had to have a snout. She wasn't really bothered, she didn't get the concept of blogging but I suppose you won't if you don't blog/read blogs yourself. It's strange, but I'm scared of what people might think haha! x

  20. A few people know, and if they want to read they can! For my job I have to have an online portfolio, so people can always find it that way too.

But I can understand why, people find it embarrassing, and the internet gives a feeling of something to hide behind!

    Hmm maybe...

  21. Oh my gosh I wonder this all the time! Yes I am a secret blogger, only my boyfriend, family and one friend know I blog. I think it is just because I am worried they will laugh at my blog or think its kinda lame, but hey I am sure one day the truth will out! :) Also, would you like to follow each other? If you decide to please follow and leave me a comment so that I can follow you right back :) x

  22. I'm a secrete blogger, only a few people know that I blog. I guess my reason is because people can be so judgemental and jealous instead of being supportive . X

  23. I'm so glad people feel the same, thought I was alone in this! At the moment I have this blog completely dedicated to nail art but would love to have a more general one too. I find that blogging is so personal and always get a bit self-conscious if I ever have to promote it! Don't know whether this is necessarily a good thing!
    Great post!

  26. I mentioned it on Facebook, so I guess everyone who knows me on Facebook knows! I haven't mentioned it to casual acquaintances, and I certainly haven't mentioned it to my mum (don't need that level of criticism, thanks), but if someone ever stumbled across it I'd happily tell them about it.

  27. I am also a secret blogger! Haha 'secret' makes it sound so sly like we're living a separate life but personally it just hasn't seem to come up in conversation... I just think it would be awkward to say! I will eventually tell more of my friends and family about it when I feel my blog is slightly more established and it's something I'm going to commit to for a long time, but for the meanwhile I will be staying undercover haha! Interesting post, Hollie X

  28. I'm a secret blogger! It's nice to know there are others out there, some people think it's really odd to not want everyone to know. I told one of my best friends and my boyfriend recently who were both really excited and said it looked good, and I'm sure as I get more confident with it and it grows a bit more I'll be more likely to shout it from the rooftops! Definitely an interesting topic...
