MAC Retro Matte Lipstick in All Fired Up

MAC is a funny brand, people seem to either love it or hate it. I am quite happy to state that I am a fan, I have been using their eye shadows for years and am yet to find anything that matches there staying power and finish. I have also recently become a little hooked on their lip glass glosses and their infamous lipsticks.

Due to this naughty habit I can no longer walk pasta MAC store without purchasing. So when visiting my sister last in London, I couldn’t resist popping into their Covent Garden store and ended up treating myself to their Retro Matte Lipstick in All Fired Up. If you pop by this blog regularly you will know that I can’t resist a bright pink lip!
This is such a gorgeous lipstick! It's a very beautiful bright dark pink-red with blueish tones that looks so vivid and pretty. This is a great night-time color but I feel you can really pull this off in daytime as well.
The color leaves a stain so it survives eating and drinking pretty well. Since it is a retro matte formula, this color lasts the whole day, I usually get about a 6-hour wear of this lipstick without any touch ups which is pretty amazing. I’ve had no issues with smudging either and it’s got awesome staying power! The wear is great even when paired with a gloss.
I know a lot of people complain about Matte Lipsticks as they can be quite drying, I’ve had no issues at all with this lipstick and think it has quite a smooth finish, although if you have dry lips already I’m not sure I’d recommend it as it would probably highlight any imperfections. I exfoliate and moisturize my lips religiously so I wouldn't expect that to be an issue with most lipsticks.
Highly recommend this lip color as its high quality and I think it would suit most skin tones! At £15.50 it’s not cheap but this is definitely a classic lipstick that I know I’ll be repurchasing when I run out!
Are you a lover of MAC? If so what’s your favorite product of theirs?

The British Tag!

Quite a while ago now, I spotted this tag over on the lovely Laurens blog ‘Keep Calm it’s Only a Blog’ and it made me giggle so I thought I would give it a whirl myself! So here my ‘British Tag’...

1. How many cups of tea do you have a day, and how many sugars?

About 7 months ago I completely gave up coffee as was drinking an insane amount, I then began replacing this with tea so went cold turkey for a bit and gave that up too! However I love a  good old cup of tea, there’s something so comforting about it, so I have started drinking it again in moderation and have no more than one cuppa a day. I don’t have any sugars but I do like a good old builder’s brew, so it needs to be quite strong and not too milky.

2. Favourite part of your roast?

I LOVE a good old fashioned proper roast dinner! I think my favourite part has to be the Yorkshire puddings, yes more than one, closely followed by parsnips!

3. Favourite dunking biscuit?

All time fave has to be a rich tea biscuit, but you have to quick so it doesn’t go too soggy and fall into your drink, yuck!

4. Favourite quintessentially British pastime?

Cream teas!  So yummy or it has to be fish and chips sat along the harbour.

5. Favourite word?

Arse... said Father Ted style... that’s quite English right?!

6. Cockney rhyme slang?

I had to Google this... I am useless and def not a Londoner!

ruby murray = curry
currant bun = sun
Adam and Eve = believe

7. Favourite sweets?

I love the old school British sweets, like Refreshers and flying saucers.

8. What would your pub be called?

The Queen Vic, as in the one in Albert square off Eastenders! How cool would it be to be the land lady of the Vic!

9. No.1 British person?

Just one??! Umm the Queen followed by the Spice Girls! Does harry potter count?

10. Favourite shop and restaurant?

Shops - I like Topshop & New Look at the moment, for a proper British shop though I guess id have to say Marks and Spencer's!
Restaurants – I like The Stables it’s a Pizza and Cider place near where I live.

11. What British song pops into your head?

Anything by the Beatles or Take That

12. Marmite?
I am an odd one... hate it on normal bread, like it on toast... also super nice melted into plain pasta!
I hope you enjoyed this 'British Tag' post, I tag all of you, British or not, to give it a go!

Let me know if you do try it!

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser

I have wanted to try Liz Earles Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser for a ridiculously long time now. However even after reading many raving reviews about it I could never quite justify the price tag so just kept it on my lust after list. So lo and behold, I was beyond excited when it turned up in a Birchbox one month and then I was lucky to receive it again my Glamour Beauty Power List 2014 box.  After using both samples I thought I would share a review, so here are my thoughts...
Before I start I just want to share with you all that I HATE flannels/sponges etc. Hence why I’ve not been jumping onto the Hot Cleanser band wagon that I’ve seen so many of my fellow raving about. I just think they harbour germs and are unhygienic! Anyone else feel like this or am I being ridiculously OCD?
This stuff is really easy to apply, the first step is to massage onto dry skin, all over your face and neck. It smells lovely! It’s a gorgeous eucalyptus, citrusy, summer garden scent which is so refreshing. You need to work in circular movements from the centre of your face outwards, gently massaging over the eyelids last so you avoid spreading your eye makeup all over your face. Next you rinse the pure muslin cloth in hand-hot water and wring out before gently wiping off the cream. You then rinse and repeat, using a clean section of the cloth for each bit of your face.
As you can imagine the cloth gets coated in mascara – they do recommend keeping your cloths fresh and cleaning by placing in a 30 degree white wash every few days and allow them to dry naturally. I’m going to assume that if you buy a full size product it would come with more than one cloth?! Therefore if that’s the case I can bypass my hygiene issues around it! – I sound neurotic, I promise I not!
In terms of results, it removes all traces of makeup without you having to properly scrub like you do with some products! Even after the first use my skin felt a hell of a lot smoother, cleaner and fresher! My skin feels really hydrated and I can see why it’s so popular!
For £24.75 which gives you 200ml, it’s a bit out of my price range but it has improved my skin so I have been impressed. It’s a little out of my price range but I think I will be adding it to my Christmas wish list and see if anyone treats me to it!

Novembers Birchbox

I HAVE NO WILL POWER!! So this month I have re-subscribed to both Birchbox and Crown & Glory’s Gliteratti subscription boxes! I am hopeless! However I am a little glad I when this month’s Birchbox arrived on my doorstep with the theme of ‘Cosy at Home’ that’s what this time of year is all about, right? I love getting home into my pjs, doing a bit of pampering and getting cosy on the sofa. These dark evenings have to be good for something!

So here is what I received inside November’s Birchbox...

OPI Coca Cola Red Nail Polish – I have been lusting over OPIs limited edition Coca Cola collection for a few weeks so was really happy when this arrived! I love fire engine red nails so this is perfect for me and I can’t wait to try it out!

Beauty Protector Protect & Treat Hair Mask – I am on a mission to have healthy happy locks so am looking forward to giving this a try! I received 2 little tubs of this so can try it a couple of times.

Dr. Jart + Most Moist Water Act Skin Mist- it’s nice to receive a full sized product! I’ve really got into using Toners lately so am looking forward to trying this out!

Lord & Berry Mini Bronzer in Sunny – it’s a bit too much of an orange shade for me!

Weleda Pomegranate Creamy Body Wash – this smells gorgeous!! I wish it was in a bigger tube!

Drinkwel – Err this is a bizarre one!! A multivitamin you take before and after drinking alcohol to help with hangovers?! Think I’ll stick to my mars bar and lucozade works every time for me!

I have to say I was a little dissapointed they didn’t do more around the theme of ‘cosy at home’ I’m not sure half these products really sum up being cosy at home??! I think they could have popped a chocolate bar or a face mask in, maybe that’s just me though? Let’s see what next month’s box brings!

Do you subscribe to any beauty boxes?

Motivational Monday #37

This completely sums up where I am this year! I have spent more time saying yes, trying new things, going on more adventures, learning and meeting new people.  And do you know what? I am having the best time! I feel so much more content and I’ve grown as a person, I can’t wait to see what happens next!

My Autumn Snail Mail Buddy!

During the Autumn round of Bloggers Snail Mail so many wonderful bloggers signed up to join in, I was so overwhelmed and excited by the numbers! There was also an even number of sign ups which meant I was unable to join in, boo!

I mentioned this in one of my posts and the wonderful Kezzie who blogs over at KezzieAG commented saying she would love to be my snail mail buddy! This was such a kind gesture, so getting to know Kezzie over email it didn’t surprise me that she is such a lovely person and all round good egg!
It’s been really fun getting to know each other and finding out that we share common interests such as Doctor Who, vintage things and shopping! I think it’s my favourite bit of The Bloggers Snail Mail project!

I was beyond excited to get home this morning and find a package from Kezzie! Enclosed were some amazing treats and a gorgeous handmade card. Please can we all take a moment to coo over the stunning Vintage style perfume bottle, I am in LOVE with it! I want to find a vintage style mirrored tray to display it on now! Kezzie also sent me a 3D manicure set which I can’t wait to play with, some gorgeous green shimmer eye liner for Christmas and some pretty daisy hair clips which are in my hair as I sit here typing. She also sent me this stunning amethyst gemstone belt, I think I’m going to use it more as a necklace though and layer it with a few others. Finally the last item I pulled out of the package was a pebble painted with a shimmery blue/green heart which she recently picked up on a trip to the beach.
They are all such thoughtful gifts and I feel so spoilt. I would like to say a massive thank you to Kezzie for being such an awesome snail mail buddy!
If you like to sign up for the winter round of #TheBloggersSnailMail check this post outhere. Signups are open till Friday 28th November!

Revlon Professional Uniq One Coconut All In One Hair Treatment

I am so excited to be sharing this product with you all! It is my complete miracle product and I have to admit I am a little in love with it! It has completely altered my hairs condition and has made it look and feel so much healthier. Meet Revlon Professionals Uniq One Coconut All In One Hair Treatment...

This product states it has ’10 real benefits’, so let me talk through each one and the effects it has had on my hair...
1.    REPAIR FOR DRY DAMAGED HAIR – Massive tick against this one! I get my hair cut every 8 weeks, in weeks 6-8 due to my hair being coloured a lot and very fine my locks start to get ratty and knotted – the hobo look ain't cool! I can’t straighten it at this point as it’s too frizzy. However I am currently on week 10 (I am too poor to get my hair cut at the moment) but you would know! It’s in fab condition, not drying at all and I keep getting complements on how nice it currently looks!

2.    SHINE AND FRIZ CONTROL – IT makes my hair look sleek, healthy and glossy which all equal a very happy Gemma!

3.    HEAT PROTECTION – added bonus! I hate using tons of different products on my hair so love that Uniq One does it all!

4.    SILKINESS AND SMOOTHNESS – See no.2

5.    HAIR COLOUR PROTECTION WITH UVA AND UVB FILTERS – Everyone keeps asking if I’ve coloured my hair again lately, it’s not been dyed for nearly 3 months, this spray has definitely helped to maintain and brighten the colour.

6.    EASIER BRUSHING AND IRONING – My hair can be a knotty mess but since using this it’s been so much easier to brush.

7.    INCREDIBLE DETANGLING – No 6 & 7 go together in my world and this stuff is magical! I am no longer ripping my hair out when trying to brush it and as a result of this it now feels and looks a lot thicker!

8.    LONG LASTING HAIRSTYLE – I don’t really do much with my hair in terms of styling, I either blow dry it straight or its up in a messy bun. I would say it looks a lot tidier for longer if that makes any sense!

9.    SPLIT ENDS PREVENTION – Normally I would look like I need a haircut and you can spot the frizzy ended result of split ends a mile off with my locks, but not this time! It’s still looking pretty sleek!

10.  ADDS BODY – As someone who suffers from fine flat hair, it is a massive pain, but since using this I have noticed it has a little more oomph to it which is a fantastic bonus!
I am also a sucker for coconut scented products and this smells divine! I can still smell it in my hair hours after use which I love.
It’s also so easy to use, I just spray it into damp hair then blow dry and style like usual. No need for any other products as this one covers all bases!
Its costs £13.99 and a bottle goes a long way. This spray conditioning spray has definitely become a daily staple for my hair.
Have you tried this product before? Do you love it as much as I do?

Foryou Anti-ageing Moisturiser M4

Foryou recently got in touch and asked if I’d like to try out there Anti-ageing Moisturiser M4 which is for combination skin. As I’m getting slightly older I have started to pay more attention to my skin and what products I use. I always moisturise but with my combination skin I usually find it hard to find products that suit so I was intrigued to see what this would be like.
It contains Argan Oil, Hyaluronic Acid, Retinol and Zinc Oxide which acts an SPF. I’m not a huge fan of the smell and I’m not quite sure how to describe it! However the product itself sinks in pretty quickly, doesn’t sit on your skin like some moisturisers and is quite light and not greasy at all. A little seems to go along way and I really like the way it makes my skin feel.

A full sized version is £20, which I would be happy to purchase as I’ve been pretty impressed!

The Body shop All-In-One Insta Blur

I recently ran out of my beloved Benefit POREfessional prime, I was debating whether to shell out for a replacement or try something different. At this time The Body Shops All-In-One Instablur came out and I decided to give that a try, at £14 it was a lot cheaper in comparison.
It’s a thick gel and I was worried how it would go on my skin, but I’m pleased to say it’s easy to apply and isn’t oily at all. It leaves my skin feeling so soft and my makeup is so even and smooth, resulting in a really professional look.
Over the last few weeks my skins been a bit of a nightmare so I have stopped using foundation and as much concealer trying to give my skin a rest. Its worked my skin has cleared up and looks so much better! To try and keep it looking good I’ve just been using Instablur on its own and I am so pleased with the results, the below picture is with just Instablur and no foundation or concealer...

I noticed that this helped massively in concealing the lines on my forehead. I’m in denial about these lines, I still get spots so I refuse to believe I’m getting any signs of getting old! However this product has really helped to cover the lines up. It’s also fab for covering up large pores and really brightens up my skin.
I recommend it to all the gorgeous women who have their imperfections and are looking for the perfect primer, because hello ladies! You have found it! This has become my day to day face product and is fantastic!

Motivational Monday #36

I LOVE today’s quote, I want everyone who stops and reads this post to spread some love this week!
Give someone a compliment, stop and really listen to someone, do a good deed.... it doesn’t need to be a big thing. Just give a moment of your time make someone’s day and put a smile on their face.
Positivity spreads positivity!

Argan Dew Miraculous Argan Oil

The kind folk at Argan Dew kindly sent me a ton of their Miraculous Argan Oil hair treatment samples to try a while back. Without really paying much attention, for the past 6 months this product has become a daily part of my hair prep each morning! As I reach my final sachet I thought id share my love for this product with you all!
Now as you will know if you are a regular to my little space on the internet here, my hair is fine which I hate! Mix fine hair with dry ends and the outcome is a tangled, matted nightmare! However since using Argan Oil regularly my hair is in such a better condition and so much more manageable.
To use this product all you need to do is pair a couple of drops (you really don’t need much, hence why my samples have lasted so long!) into your hands and massage into damp hair. I apply it from my midlengths to the ends of my hair. You then just style as normal!
On pay day I am going to be treating myself to a full sized bottle which is £24.95, I think this is pretty reasonable when you think how long it will last you!
What’s your go to hair rescue product?

The Winter Bloggers Snail Mail - Sign Ups Now Open!

Welcome to the Winter round of The Bloggers Snail Mail! Way back at the beginning of March I launched the first ‘The Bloggers Snail Mail’ and this is now going to be the fourth round!! Ive had so much fun organising this project and chatting to lots of new lovely bloggers, I really hope you get as much out of it as I do.

So here is how it works:
A quarterly gift exchange where you can meet other bloggers from around the world and spread a bit of positivity! People get paired up in March, June, September and December. During the sign up period, every participant will be paired with one other new participant and you’ll spend a few weeks becoming BFFs (i.e. reading each other’s blogs, sending happy e-mails, you name it!). After that, you’ll send your partner a gift from your country that you think they may like from the info you now know about them. There’s a £5 limit on the gifts to make this project as affordable as possible. Be as creative as you can and make it meaningful! Motivate them, tell them all the beautiful things you learned about them, and make them feel special! We could all use a little encouragement, especially from our new friends. Also, each package should include a postcard (or a letter if you can’t find one!) with some motivating love or positive words of wisdom written all over it.
So to sign up for the ‘The Bloggers Snail Mail’ you just need to send an email to whatsinyourmakeupbag@gmail.com, title it ‘The Bloggers Snail Mail’ and include in it your name, where you are from, and you blog! Sign ups will be open until the Friday 28th November. I will then randomly match you all up aiming to make sure you are with someone from another country or at least in another area from you! I will then let you know by Monday 1st December  who your partner is and you then have 4 weeks to get to know them! So the week of the 29th December, you can then send your new buddy their Snail Mail!
Once you receive your gifts, write a blog post about your experience, sharing what you gave, received, and learnt through this being part of this and meeting your new pal.
If you want to tweet about this project, use the hashtag #TheBloggersSnailMail, You can also tag me @GemmaMarieJames and ill retweet your post, so everyone can share your experience!
Please only sign up if you definitely are willing to take part and if you want to be matched with someone from the same country as you to save on postage then please let me know!!

The Realities of Blogging Every Day...

I actually completed #Blogtober14! I actually blogged every day throughout October! Go me!
I am excited and shocked by this fact as I genuinely didn’t think I would actually pull it off! I’ve always blogged 3 or 4 times a week, which has suited my life and I had fallen into a comfy routine with it. I guess looking back I was getting a bit bored of the routine and of blogging in general so doing #Blogtober14 has actually been a pretty fun way of shaking things up!
I know a lot of bloggers do blog every day and doing this has really raised my respect for them! I juggle two jobs, I am a carer for my mum, I have a pretty good social life and I also run a small online jewellery shop. My life is hectic at the best of times and blogging has always been my ‘me’ time. So trying to fit in a blog post on the days when I’m doing all of the above has been a little testing! Scheduling posts has been a lifesaver! I usually do my blogging on a Sunday afternoon and a couple of evenings in the week depending on what else is going on. So I knew from the start the only way I was going to complete this challenge was by scheduling posts and being a little creative with my time! I wouldn’t say it’s been easy but I quite like to be busy and I find I am at my most productive then!
I tend to do things in blocks, like taking a ton of photographs for reviews all in one go. Anyone else finding as we head into winter, getting decent lighting is turning into a bit of a nightmare! I then sit and do the writing all in one go too. It makes things a lot easier, however I also love the spontaneity of writing when the moment takes me and just posting it there and then. This was harder to do when you are posting each and every day and it was something I really missed doing.
Blogging everyday has really got my creativity flowing and resparked my love of blogging. ‘Lipsticks and Lashes’ is my baby and I think I may have been neglecting it for a little while before this challenge. I was a little worried I might run of ideas for posts but if anything my current list of post ideas has tripled and I could probably continue blogging each and every day for the next few months without running out of ideas!
When I told some fellow bloggers I was going to blog every day, the response was ‘aren’t you worried the quality of your posts will suffer?’ I was already half way through the month and not really thought about it. I work hard on my blog and I don’t think my posts became poor quality I think I just didn’t have time to give each post some love after they had been posted. Normally I post then promote them via twitter etc which I didn’t do much of during October. This something I really missed doing but due to being busy I just didn’t get the time to do it. I thought this would have affected traffic to my blog as I wouldn’t say I was getting each post out there as much as I usually would but in terms of traffic, my figures almost doubled! This really surprised me I wasn’t really expecting that, I had a more consistent flow of traffic through Lipsticks and Lashes which was great.
Looking at the pros and cons of blogging every day, although there are benefits I think what’s more important for me is getting that healthy life/blog balance. Blogging is one of my favorite hobbies, if it could become more than a hobby then that would be a dream come true but for right now I’m not convinced blogging every day is something I want to do. I’d rather focus on great quality posts then churn out post after post without really embracing them fully. I look at some of my favorite big time bloggers and some of them only post a couple of times a week, I think they key here is to embrace your blog, post what excites you and you can’t fail. I think we all sometimes need a reminder of why we started blogging sometimes and for me it was somewhere to use as an outlet for my love of writing and a place to whittle on!
Love your blog and post when it suits you, no one else!

Motivational Monday #35

How many of us are terrible guilty of taking for granted the little details in life? I sure am! We live in such a fast paced world where we are continuously running from one thing to the next completely ignorant to the small details. So from today I am going to slow myself down, I’m going to appreciate the cool crisp autumn air, the cosy winter nights.... I am going to focus on being more appreciative and happy.

The Body Shop Seaweed Ionic Clay Face Mask

Do you ever go through beauty obsessions? Recently for me it’s been primers, I think I’ve tried so many over the past few months! Now it’s pretty much all face cleansing products as my skin has been a bit of a mare lately! I keep having huge breakouts along my jaw line and chin. It’s hideous and makes me feel like I’m 15 again! My beautician reckons getting spots there is due to hormones, so not sure how to resolve that one?!
Any way back to my obsession, I have been hoarding cleansers and face masks in attempt to improve my skin and the latest purchase is this face mask. This being The Body Shops Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask!
I love applying face masks when I have nice hot relaxing bath so it was no difference when I used this! I smeared a layer of this over my face and just soaked in the bubbles whilst it did its magic.

It’s not the most pleasant smell, and is quite pungent but after a little while you kind of get used to it. However looking at reviews others seem to like the smell this may be just my personal taste! The instructions recommend leaving it on for 10 minutes, which I did and it dried easily within this time. Unlike some other masks, it washes off really easily.
After use my face felt really fresh and smooth, it instantly removes all the excess oil and leave skin feeling lovely and soft. My skin felt really refreshed afterwards.
At £13.00 it seemed a little extortionate to me so I hesitated a while before buying it. I was recommended it by numerous people though and decided I would give it a try. You don’t need much of the product to get good coverage on your face so it will probably last you quite a while. It may seem a bit pricey but it really is one of the most powerful masks I’ve tried lately and will be my go to mask from now on.

Nails // Rimmel London Space Dust in Total Eclipse

This has to be my favourite polish at the moment, it’s vampy and perfect for Autumn! I am in LUST! What is it I hear you ask? Well it’s Rimmel London’s Space Dust in Total Eclipse. It’s a textured polish and looks a dark black but in certain lights can shimmer a dark purple or green.
I love this polish so much, I am a fan of textured polishes I think they add a bit of edge. It’s also so easy to apply, I only needed two coats to get the look I wanted and it dries pretty quickly too. This is definitely going to be a regular on my nails over the next few months!
Have you used a textured polish?

Motivational Monday #34

And ain't this the truth! Life comes with all kinds of swerve balls but at the end of the day all I strive to be is really fucking happy. I want to be that kind of happy where your insides hurt from laughing so hard and you are grinning like a complete prat. Being happy is a simple concept but things can knock this out of the ball park (I’ve no idea where all the board game references are coming from today?!), life can be complicated, so sometimes we just need to stop, take a deep breath, remind ourselves of the good and put on a massive smile!
So I now challenge you all to go and be really, really, really fucking happy this week!
